Ira Sankey asked William Cushing to send him something new that he could use in his evangelistic work. Cushing was in Moravia, New York in 1876, and he prayed for the Lord to give him something that would bring glory to the Savior. As Cushing was waiting on the Lord, “Hiding in Thee” came to being. Sankey put the tune to it and a hymn was born!
“Hiding in Thee” was written from
Psalm 143:9: “Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me.”
Psalm 94:22: “But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.”
and Psalm 31:2: “Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.”
