The writer of this hymn is an unknown German. Edward Caswell’s translation work is what we sing today. Several others translated this hymn into English, but Caswell’s translation is the most popular.
Sir Joseph Barnby wrote the music for this hymn in 1868.
Psalm 69:34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein.
This is one verse of several that go with this song. It illustrates the importance of human beings praising God. If the heaven and earth will praise him, we, and God’s children, definitely should praise him.
